As part of an extensive renovation to modernize their home in the mountains overlooking Asheville, the homeowners had a vision of dramatically enhancing the surrounding landscape. Their vision was influenced by a strong affinity for the immense, rugged landscapes of the Intermountain West and they hoped to bring some of the grandeur of the Rocky Mountain region back to their home in Appalachia.

VDC developed a plan that introduced over 40 tons of massive boulders into the landscape, creating the framework for a cascading mountain stream, stacked ledgestone walls, and stone pathway. The centerpiece of the design is a highly-crafted ipe deck anchored by an angular outdoor fireplace that seems to grow from the boulders below. The design also features a lawn terrace, raised gardens, and bluestone patio.
