Asheville Christian Academy

Swannanoa NC

VDC & Padgett & Freeman Architects were selected to develop the design for the upfit of Asheville Christian Academy's central campus building, which included a revamp of the existing drop off and entry plaza. The design links the 3 campus buildings with one, cohesive entry plaza & grounds, helping to facilitate better pedestrian and vehicular circulation.

The landscape reflects the symmetrical nature of the building design by creating identical spaces that flank the new school entrance along with a tree-lined drop-off lane and open greens for outdoor classroom use. VDC intentially separated the drop-off / pick-up lane from the through traffic road and brought it closer to the school to better facilitate movement of students and access to the building as well as provide a safer environment for pedestrians.

Ample space was designed into the drop off / pick up area, providing wide walkways with curvilinear seat walls along the length of the drop off as well as new site lighting. Berms help to blend the seat walls into the landscape and reduce the visual impact of the walls from the school.
